UCSD Study Links Higher PTSD Risk To Genetics (KPBS)

Scientists from UC San Diego School of Medicine, the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System and other institutions analyzed DNA samples from more than 13,000 U.S. soldiers and discovered two statistically significant genetic variants that might be associated with PTSD.

In a study released Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers found that between 2000 and 2010, hospitalizations for ischemic stroke, the most common type, dropped nearly 20 percent overall - but among people ages 25 to 44, there was a sharp 44 percent increase in the rate…. / Doctors attribute the apparent rise in strokes among younger adults to the same lifestyle risk factors traditionally found in older patients, such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Boston better prepped for tech talent than Bay Area (Reuters)

(Reuters) - Boston is the U.S. city best placed to capitalize on the shift to a digital economy, with the tech-centered San Francisco Bay Area second as it lost ground because of worsening quality of life, a report said on Wednesday….  After Boston and the Bay Area, the top 10 cities in order were Denver; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; San Diego; Austin, Texas; Los Angeles; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; and New York.

Germany had so much renewable energy on Sunday that it had to pay people to use electricity (QZ)

On Sunday, May 8, Germany hit a new high in renewable energy generation. Thanks to a sunny and windy day, at one point around 1pm the country’s solar, wind, hydro and biomass plants were supplying about 55 GW of the 63 GW being consumed, or 87%.  Power prices actually went negative for several hours, meaning commercial customers were being paid to consume electricity.
