September 9, 2014 (Lemon Grove)--The Lemon Grove Historical Society and the Lemon Grove Oral History Project will celebrate local Hispanic heritage on Sept. 20 from 1 - 4 p.m. in the Rosemary Putnam Community Room of the Lemon Grove Library, 3001 School Lane.
The festive event will feature music, food, photo display, a short history video on the 1931 school desegregation case (Alvarez v. Lemon Grove School Board), audience reminiscences and a book signing of the new children's books "Harold and the Hot Rod" and "Max and the Low Rider Car" by local author Tonton Jim and artist E. Felix Lyon, both of whom who will be present.
The Oral History Project, John Valdez, director, videotapes reminiscences by Lemon Grove's pioneer Hispanic families.
“The new children's books from Dayton Publishing relate the hilarious adventures of Max, Theena, Mr. Lobo, Casanova Cugat and other amazing furry, characters as they build customized cars and save a river boat -- and learn why friendship, inclusion and fair play make life richer and more fun,” says Helen Ofield with the Lemon Grove Historical Society.
A civic proclamation marking the event will be presented, along with recognition of Kathleen Strzelecki, artist on the Lemon Grove History Mural, which extensively portrays our Spanish heritage.
The event is free and all ages are welcome to the party.
