January 9, 2015 (El Cajon) – A man wearing dark clothing was struck by two vehicles after trying to jaywalk between signals in the 800 block of Avocado Avenue in El Cajon.

The victim, El Cajon resident Charles Peralta, 57, died at the scene of trauma to his head and torso.

El Cajon Police responded to multiple calls at 5:20 p.m. The vehicles involved were a Kia sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a Toyota Camry car.

Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated in the investigation, according to police. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision; speed of the vehicles at the time of the accident is still being determined.

“The El Cajon Police Department would like to express our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Peralta,” Lt. R. Soulard stated. “We would also like to remind those who choose to walk during hours of reduced lighting to always wear bright or reflective clothing, and to cross the street at controlled intersections with marked cross-walks and traffic control signals. Don't step out into the roadway until you are certain that traffic has seen you and has come to a complete stop.”

In addition, he offered this tip for motorists. “For commuters driving in hours of reduced lighting, allow for more reaction time due to decreased visibility.”

The police are blaming the victum

Who has a wardrobe of lime green pants, jackets, and other clothes? Levi's, dark blue. Boots and shoes are dark blue. My wind proof jacket is dark blue I don't dress like a Peacock! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peafowl

Victim was crossing illegally mid-block at night,

Very dangerous, even if cars are within the speed limit. I nearly hit someone in El Cajon recently who did the same thing right in front of me, not far from where this occurred. Of course drivers can help by going slower at night. As for lime green, actually we recently got my hubby a neon green jacket from a local sports shop to wear while walking our dog at night, since there are no sidewalks or streetlights where we live. Better safe than fashion-conscious!
