May 15, 2018 (La Mesa) – The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host “Joint Replacement,” a program on hip and knee total joint replacement surgeries and hip resurfacing procedures, from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 23. The program is part of the library’s “Wellness Wednesday” series, normally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Advance RSVP is not necessary. Handouts will be available.

The presenter on May 23 will be Astrid LeTouzic, R.N., orthopedic program manager, Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s Joint Endeavor Program. The hospital’s Joint Endeavor program was launched in 1989, and later implemented at all Sharp hospitals in San Diego in 1994. The Joint Endeavor team includes board-certified surgeons with a special interest and expertise in joint replacement, physical therapists, case managers, nurses and social workers. The team looks at every step of the patient's care, from preoperative tests to post-discharge home safety, to ensure that patients achieve the best possible outcomes. The program includes patient education, clinical pathways, multimodal pain management (to better control pain, lower narcotic use and improve function with fewer complications) and postoperative rehabilitation.

Kathy Quinn, Herrick Library director, said, “This class will be an informative presentation about the hospital’s hip and knee replacement program. You will learn about the hospital’s journey to become a Center for Excellence for total knee and hip replacement. You will also learn about the hospital acquiring the latest surgical technology, which ensures excellent results and fast recoveries with MAKOplasty. Since most joint replacements are due to osteoarthritis, you will learn about disease progression and who is a candidate for hip and knee replacement. On display will be the actual components that comprise a total knee and hip replacement. About one million knee and hip replacements are performed each year in the U.S.”

MAKOplasty is a surgical procedure for partial knee or total hip arthroplasty that uses a robotic arm interactive orthopedic system. It was developed by MAKO Surgical Corp., a medical device company headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is a consumer health public library specializing in health research information, accessible both on-site and via the Internet.
