May 8, 2012 (San Diego)—The League of Conservation Voters San Diego has endorsed Congressman Bob Filner in the San Diego Mayoral election.

“Over a 20-year Congressional career, Filner has proven himself a staunch defender of the environment and tireless supporter of healthier communities. He has earned a 92% lifetime voting score from the League of Conservation Voters,” a release issued by the LCV states.  “Throughout his decades of service to San Diego, Filner's commitment to protecting environmental laws, advocating for environmental justice and defending the science of climate change has been steadfast. With roots as an educator, Filner has gone beyond a strong voting record and been an exceptional advocate better awareness of environmental issues both in Congress and in San Diego.”

In addition to his work in Congress, Filner has been an outspoken ally for LCV priorities in San Diego. He recently stood with a wide coalition of community leaders to testify against SANDAG's 2050 Regional Transportation Plan that perpetuates a broken transportation model and undermines the region's commitment to diverse transit.

"Congressman Filner's record is head and shoulders above the other leading candidates for mayor," said Livia Borak, President of San Diego League of Conservation Voters. "As mayor, we have no doubt that he will be the champion for environmental protections, improvements to water quality and supply, and responsible growth that San Diego so desperately needs."

"I am honored that the LCV is standing with me in this campaign for San Diego's future and I will continue to stand firm in my belief that San Diego public officials need to be vigilant in our pursuit of clean water, adequate open spaces and attractive beaches. Too often we have seen the special interests win out at the expense of our environment.  When I am Mayor, all of that will change." Bob Filner
