July 15, 2014 (La Mesa) -- Today, the La Mesa Police Department announced today a partnership with Nextdoor (www. nextdoor.com).  Nextdoor is a private social media network for neighborhoods that builds stronger, safer communities by connecting neighbors together.

This integration with Nextdoor will enable the La Mesa Police Department to utilize another source to communicate online with La Mesa neighborhoods. Nextdoor is a great resource for existing and new Neighborhood Watch groups to interface with the La Mesa Police Department, enhancing community relations.

Already Nextdoor has proven to be an essential and well-adopted tool for La Mesa residents. There are currently 575 La Mesa residents using the Nextdoor website.

With Nextdoor, La Mesa residents can join private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, and local services. The La Mesa Police Department will be able to post information, such as safety tips and crime alerts, through the Nextdoor websites within the city.

Nextdoor is a free resource for residents and the Police Department. Each neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website. The website is accessible only to residents who verify that they live in the neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor websites. The Police Department will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information, or content. Rather the Department staff will simply be sharing information with members. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by search engines.

Those interested in joining their neighborhood’s Nextdoor website can visit www.nextdoor.com and enter their address. If residents have questions about their Nextdoor website, please visit help.nextdoor.com.

If you are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch group you can privately message the La Mesa Crime Prevention Specialist directly from the site, email her at  cortega@ci.la-mesa.ca.us, or by calling the Crime Prevention Unit at 619-667-7545.
