April 12, 2018 (San Diego) - San Diego State head baseball coach Mark Martinez was honored with Center for Community Solutions' Champions Award, recognizing his efforts in starting Healthy Relationships and Consent Education training with SDSU baseball student-athletes and coaches.

Martinez reached out to CCS in 2016 to provide SDSU baseball student-athletes and coaches with regularly scheduled training. This prevention education and training led to an increase in collaboration with the SDSU athletic department, as all freshmen student-athletes at SDSU participated in this training last fall.

"Mark has shown excellent leadership," said CCS chief executive officer Verna Griffin-Tabor. "No one has reached out to CCS like this. His leadership with his athletes and being proactive to make sure that they develop to be excellent young men on and off the field is what separates him from other nominees."

Martinez was one of two Champion Award recipients that were honored last Friday at the CCS 19th Annual Tea & Tonic fundraising event.

"The positive impacts (from the training) can best be summed up from the team's comments on the evaluation of the program we presented," stated Griffin-Tabor. "The athletes wish they had this information much earlier -- when they were in junior high or high school. As a result of their understanding of the dynamics of healthy relationships, these young athletes become stewards of ensuring that future intimate partner violence and sexual assault can be prevented."

Martinez, currently in his fourth season as head coach and 13th overall at SDSU, has helped lead the SDSU baseball program to its highest academic progress rate while posting the highest team GPA and most scholar-athletes in the 82-year history of the SDSU baseball program. On the field, the Aztecs are the only team in the nation to have won four conference tournament championships in the last five years.
