June 22, 2016 (San Diego) - A sold-out crowd packed the Garden Room at Marie Callender's in the College Area for the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce's breakfast with La Mesa mayor Mark Arapostathis.

Mayor Arapostathis spoke about the renovation of University Ave.  The sidewalk is going to be renovated to make the street more walkable and more appealing to businesses that want to set up shop there.  It will also be a better-looking connection from San Diego into La Mesa.  A new Starbucks drive-thru will be placed where a dog groomer once was and medians will be renovated.

The Boys and Girls Club will also be coming to the La Mesa Arts Academy.  The west side of their new facility will be 25,000 square feet.

Mayor Arapostathis also announced that at 6:00 p.m. next Wednesday, there will be a dedication on La Mesa Blvd. and a new time capsule will be buried.  Because of his theater background, he is pushing hard for a new performing arts center.

When asked about the water situation, the Mayor said that La Mesa is trying to plant "two trees for every one that comes down."  La Mesa is trying to get rid of foliage that is not benificiary and reduce lawns that need large amounts of water.

Upcoming La Mesa Chamber events:

  • June 24, 2:00 p.m.: send-off for Mama Sanfilippo of Sanfilippo's Pizza
  • July 18: senior volunteer luncheon
  • August 26:  golfing at Sycuan
