April 14, 2015 (San Diego) – Mayor Kevin Faulconer has released plans for a $3.2 billion budget for the next fiscal year focused on services that he says “give more San Diegans in more communities the opportunity to succeed. San Diegans will see more street repairs, better parks and more equality to neighborhood services, so your community is thriving no matter where you live,” the Mayor adds.

The plan includes repairs of 300 miles of streets, as part of the mayor’s goal of repaving 1,000 miles of roadway over the next five years.  Hours will be extended at 16 of the city’s busiest recreation centers, where upgrades will also be made to playgrounds and lighting, as well as expanding programs for preschoolers and teenagers.

In addition, the Mayor’s plan calls for staffing a new fire station in Mission Valley and a temporary fire station in the Skyline area, which a Grand Jury had singled out as in need of faster emergency response times. After school programs and high-speed Internet access at libraries will also be expanded.

Faulconer also aims to update nine community zoning plans, though it’s not yet clear exactly what those changes will entail.

The $3.2 billion budget reflects a substantial increase from last year’s $2.97 billion budget, due to increased revenues from property, sales and hotel taxes among others.

Next up, the City Council will hold hearings on the budget, with a vote on a final proposed budget slated for June.
