March 1, 2010 (El Cajon) – A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on March 13th for Robert Dale Hamann founder of the Hamann Companies construction dynasty in El Cajon. Hamann, 86, passed away on February 11th.

Born in Canada on December 9, 123, he moved to San Diego with his family at age 12 and graduated in 1941 from Grossmont High School in El Cajon. He served in World War II as a Navy radioman. In 1948, he married Dorothy Peterson and they had four sons: Jeffrey, Gregg, Curtis and Barry.

After receiving a BS degree in civil engineering from San Diego State University, he worked in construction projects for his father before forming his own company in 1954. He built homes and industrial buildings throughout San Diego County. By 2002, his various business entities became named Hamann Companies.

Robert Hamann was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and supported many Christian ministries and missionaries, including the San Diego Rescue Mission, Christian Community Theater, Set Free San Diego, COAD, the YMCA, and Focus on the Family. Known for his philanthropy, he helped build a hospital, a nurses' dormitory, escorted high school work teams, shipped school supplies and took medical teams to Honduras.

The Robert Hamann Family Trust made news last year for its donations to a Republican Central Committee which were found by the FPPC to have been illegally funneled to Assembly Joel Anderson’s campaign. Anderson subsequently returned the funds and was fined for the violation.

Hamann enjoyed fishing and scuba diving from his catamaran, the Gloriamaris. Also a private pilot, he flew his Cherokee Lance throughout the western U.S. and Mexico and once took a nine-month trip around the world with family.  He is survived by his wife, four sons, fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2930 Howard Avenue, San Diego, on March 13, 2010, at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2930 Howard Avenue, San Diego, CA 92104, for the "R.D. Hamann Sanctuary Renovation Fund".
