NEW CITY QUEENS CROWNED FOR LA MESA AND SANTEE

March 8, 2011 (San Diego's East County)--La Mesa Mayor Art Madrid and Santee Mayor Randy Voepel on Friday crowned winners of the cities' 2011 pageants, a glamourous tradition since the late 1960s.  

 

Miss La Mesa Katie Martin, Miss La Mesa Teen Monica Popp, Miss Santee Maria Maes and Miss Santee Teen Savannah Keener were formally presented with their crowns.

 

A total of 48 young women from East County entered the pageants in hopes of becoming their new city ambassadors. The contestants were scored on personal interviews, speech, poise and personality, sportswear, evening gown and an on stage question.

 

The young women will spend their year attending grand openings, parades and city events. The Miss winners each received a $1,000 scholarship and the Teen winners each received a $500 scholarship.

 

Katie Martin, Miss La Mesa 2011, is a 20 year old student at San Diego State University and aspires to work for the state department or united nations. Katie is a dancer and has training in jazz, ballet, tap and hip hop. She enjoys traveling and enjoys trying new kinds of ethnic foods.

 

Monica Popp, Miss Teen La Mesa 2011 is a 16-year-old junior at West Hills High School where she is a scholar athlete. Monica has played varsity tennis for 2 years and also maintains a 4.0 GPA. She is completely fluent in Japanese and is also a journalist for her school newspaper. She hopes to one day manage an international group of talented individuals in the art and entertainment industry.

 

Maria Maes, Miss Santee 2011 is a 17 year old senior at West Hills High School, where she is on the honor roll and is taking 3 AP classes. She aspires to become a lawyer or an international business woman, and enjoys going to the gym and the beach. Maria ran for the Miss Teen Santee title 4 times prior to winning the title of Miss Santee 2011.

 

Savannah Keener, Miss Teen Santee 2011 is a 16-year-old sophomore attending West Hills High School where she competitively swims and plays water polo and was recently chosen as the Team Captain. Savannah enjoys volunteering for “Hope for the Homeless” and feed’s the homeless every Friday night and is busy with AP and honor classes at school. She also enjoys horseback riding and her career ambition is to become an obstetric nurse.
