April 26, 2015 (Spring Valley)--In honor of International Rotarians at Work Day, members of the La Mesa Sunrise Rotary broke ground Saturday, April 26th, on a new fruit orchard for the residents of Noah Homes, a nonprofit in Spring Valley celebrating 30 years of residential care, community advocacy and collaborative services for adults with developmental disabilities.

The group donated 43 fruit trees – apples, figs, pears and more – to be planted as an orchard on Noah Homes’ 11-acre campus. Volunteers will begin tilling, planting trees, and creating plans for next steps. With help from the community, Noah Homes will begin installing lighting, pathways and signs making the orchard not only a source of food, but also a place of relaxation and learning for the residents.

“The orchard is an important milestone in strengthening our financial stewardship as well as our sustainability,” said Molly Nocon, CEO of Noah Homes. “Enriching the lives of our residents is of the utmost importance and we are proud to be serving fresh produce from our own land.”

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, one young apple tree produces 126-252 apples (1-2 bushels) per year on average.
