HONEY SMACKS CEREAL AND PRE-CUT MELONS RECALLED DUE TO SALMONELLA

 June 15, 2018 (San Diego) – The Kellogg Company has announced a recall of Honey Smacks cereal, which is linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened over 70 people  in 31 states, including California.

 In addition, the Centers for Disease Control have confirmed that pre-cut melons in California and other states have been recalled due to a separate salmonella outbreak. Melons were sold in major outlets including Walmart , Sprouts and Trader Joes. Read more on recalled melons here.

FREE HEPATITIS A VACCINATION EVENT IN EL CAJON JUNE 21

 

June 18, 2018 (El Cajon) - If you were among the San Diego County residents to receive a hepatitis A vaccine before December 1, 2017, it’s time for your second dose of vaccine.

The County’s Health and Human Services Agency is hosting a free hepatitis A vaccination event on Thursday, June 21, at the East Region Public Health Center, 367 N. Magnolia Ave. from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.

THE MOSQUITOES ARE COMING - HELP FIGHT THE BITE!

June 11, 2018 (San Diego) -- Mosquito season is here once again; are you ready? San Diego is home to mosquitoes that spread West Nile virus, as well as to a recent invader, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti is non-native and has been spreading throughout San Diego County since at least 2015. It can transmit viruses that cause serious diseases including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Fortunately, there have been no locally-acquired mosquito-transmitted cases of these diseases in the county. Two other invasive Aedes mosquitoes have also been detected in the county, Aedes albopictus and Aedes notoscriptus; collectively, all three are called “invasive Aedes.

Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host “Stroke Prevention and Recognition,” a program about steps to prevent a stroke and recognize the signs of a stroke, from 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 27. The program is part of the library’s “Wellness Wednesday” series, normally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Advance RSVP is not necessary. Handouts will be available.

June 1, 2018 (La Mesa) -- San Diego County residents now have one more reason to find and dump out standing water in and around their homes to fight mosquitoes.

County environmental health officials have found a new type of invasive, aggressive, day-biting mosquito in La Mesa — the Australian backyard mosquito, Aedes notoscriptus, also known as the “Aussie Mozzie.”

BIRTH CONTROL PILLS RECALLED; MAY CAUSE “UNINTENDED PREGNANCY”

May 31, 2018 (San Diego) — Taytulla birth control pills made by Allergan have been recalled by the manufacturer nationwide.  The sample packages distributed by doctors are supposed to include pills with hormones for 24 days, as well as four placebo pills without hormones.

ASSISTED SUICIDE LAW IN CALIFORNIA OVERTURNED BY COURT

May 15, 2018 (Sacramento) -- Hours after a judge ruled that California’s assisted suicide law is illegal, state Attorney General Xavier Becerra indicated he will appeal the decision.

Judge Daniel Ottolia with the Riverside Superior Court ruled that the Legislature violated the law by passing the End of Life Option Act during a special session devoted to healthcare issues, the Los Angeles Times reports.

BLOOD DRIVE MAY 26 AT SANTEE STREET FAIR

One pint of blood, the amount volunteer give when they donate blood, can save up to three lives.  Around 38% of people in the U.S. are eligible to donate blood, but less than 10% do so annually.  You can help by donating blood during the Santee Street Fair on Saturday, May 26th from 10 a.m. to 3:30. COUNTY REPORT ON ALZHEIMER'S DETAILS COSTS, TOLLS OF DEMENTIAS

 

Two studies released today show an increasing economic and physical toll of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia on San Diego County families and the region’s health care economy.

The pair of studies, produced by the County’s Health and Human Services Agency, say the San Diego County region can expect the cost to provide care for those suffering and the number of caregivers needed will both balloon by 2030.

GROSSMONT HEALTHCARE DISTRICT ANNOUNCES 2018 HEALTHCARE HEROES AWARD WINNERS

April 24, 2018 (La Mesa) – The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) is proud to announce the honorees for its 2018 Healthcare Heroes awards. GHD officials said the recipients are volunteers of all ages and walks of life who serve in health care in San Diego’s East Region community.

This year’s honorees include a family practice physician who helps those not able to afford health insurance, two volunteers who provide one-on-one comfort following crisis events, a 23-year-old who spends part of her weekends in a hospital emergency room, a couple who drives people to their cancer treatments and a non-profit board member who has volunteered for the past 20 years.

“The purpose of the Healthcare Heroes Awards is to recognize volunteers whose unsung work in healthcare might not otherwise be celebrated,” said Michael Emerson, GHD board president. “We are proud to recognize the 2018 winners and their inspiring commitment to caring for others.”
