County announcement describes new facility as "a town treasure"

February 12, 2011 (Ramona) –State and County officials will join Friends of the Ramona Library to celebrate the grand opening of a new, state-of-the-art library on Tuesday, February 15 at 11 a.m.  After the ceremony, the library will welcome the public with a day of programs including live music, face painting and read-alouds for children, plus tours of the new building.

 

Located at 1275 Main Street in Ramona, the 21,000-square-foot Tuscan and Southwestern-style library is four times the size of the old building and boasts rooftop solar panels that will produce about 20 percent of the energy needed to run the library.

February 3, 2011 (La Mesa) -- On February 16, 2012, La Mesa will turn 100, and city leaders hope to celebrate throughout the year, from special commemorative events to putting a centennial spin on annual events such as Oktoberfest. The city has extended an invitation for civic organizations to collaborate with events of their own. All, it hopes, will be underwritten -as the Flag Day Parade is- by sponsorships and volunteer efforts.

COUNTY OFFERS SWEETHEART DEAL FOR VALENTINE'S DAY WEDDINGS

 

February 1, 2011 (San Diego) -- Newly-elected Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk, Ernest J. Dronenburg, Jr. announced that the County Clerk's Office will extend office hours for romantic couples seeking to marry or renew their vows on Valentine's Day. The downtown office at 1600 Pacific Highway will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for licenses and ceremonies.

 

In addition, a special "sweetheart deal” is available for newlyweds on their wedding day.

January 30, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) -- The County of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department is in the process of a Cost Recovery, Resource Allocation, and Revenue Enhancement Study to ensure the sustainability of parks and recreation in the future.  Residents of Pine Valley and Ramona are invited to participate in this process to help the County determine how to allocate future Parks resources.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION EXPERT TO SPEAK FEB. 2 IN LA MESA

 

January 21, 2011 (La Mesa) – How can tragedies such as the massacre in Arizona, the workplace shooting at Barona, or the mass school shootings at Santana and Granite Hills be prevented?

James N. Madero, Ph.D., specializes in workplace and school violence prevention. He is the Director of Violence Prevention International, a national organizational consulting firm based in San Diego. Madero will speak on Wednesday, February 2nd at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa. The event, sponsored by the La Mesa-Foothills Democratic Club, is free and open to the general public. Socializing starts at 6:30, with the program at 7 p.m.

EAST COUNTY PAGEANTS SEEK CONTESTANTS

 

On Friday, March 4, the cities of La Mesa and Santee will hold the Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee Pageants. Pageant organizers are currently seeking outgoing women ages 13-26 to participate in a program that has been a tradition in the cities since the late 1960’s and is an outstanding mentoring program for young women. The pageants are sponsored by the local Chambers of Commerce and focus on community service. There is no swimsuit competition--and is no entry fee to participate.

 

Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee 2011 will each receive at $1,000.00 scholarship while Miss La Mesa Teen and Miss Santee Teen 2011 will each receive a $500.00 scholarship.

Personal safety is a set of awareness, assertiveness, verbal confrontational skills, safety strategies, and physical techniques that can enable a person to successfully avoid,  resist, escape, and survive violent assaults.

MOTORCYCLE THIEVES ON NOTICE : NEW CA LAW MAKES POSSESSION OF A "PIGTAIL" ILLEGAL

 

December 27, 2010 (San Diego) -- Professional motorcycle thieves are using secondary ignitions and altered motorcycle ignitions known as “pigtails” as bypass devices to steal sport motorcycles throughout San Diego County. A pigtail acts like a picklock, enabling a thief to steal a bike in less than 20 seconds.

 

On January 1st, a new law takes effect which makes it a misdemeanor to possess any device or specialized tools designed to bypass the factory installed ignition of a motorcycle.

November 24, 2010 (San Pasqual Valley)--Kiburi, a 10-day-old cheetah cub, opened his eyes today (Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010) at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Animal Care Center. He took in the world, gobbled down a bottle, played for a little while, and then went back fast asleep in the window of the nursery.
