Aug. 2, 2016 (East County) – The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County, recently recognized St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC), an El Cajon-based, non-profit organization serving adults with developmental disabilities.

GHD hosted SMSC for an oversize check presentation to highlight GHD’s recent $24,375 grant to assist SMSC with on-site nursing services for more than 400 adults with developmental disabilities at its main campus. Over a 12-month period, the licensed vocational nurse at SMSC is expected to provide medical services on more than 700 occasions, SMSC officials said. About 19 percent of the SMSC population, ages 22 to over 80, are on daily medications and have conditions which may require specialized monitoring.

Founded in 1966, SMSC educates and empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. It provides work training and social experiences that encourage students to become well-rounded, contributing members of the greater community. The Center also strives to educate the community about the realities of developmental disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism and cerebral palsy.

Formed in 1952 to build Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, GHD serves as landlord for the hospital property and buildings on behalf of East County taxpayers. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent more than 500,000 people residing within the District’s 750 square miles in San Diego’s East County.
