August 12, 2016 (New York) - For their second stop in their tour of the East coast, the Padres left Pittsburgh and headed to New York for a weekend series with the Mets. Paul Clemens took the mound in Friday night’s game against Logan Verrett for the Mets.
This game held in store for us something we never thought would happen. With the bases loaded in the first, Ryan Schimpf launched a grand slam to give the Padres a 4-0 lead. This was soon added on by Jabari Blash’s solo homer for a 5-0 lead.
The Mets made some efforts at coming back in the second with Travis d’Arnaud’s two-run homer to cut the Padres’ lead to 5-2.
But Schimpf homered again in the third and the Padres were back up by 5, 7-2. Christian Bethancourt added on with a solo homer and the Padres led 8-2.
Jay Bruce singled in the fifth, scoring Curtis Granderson to cut the Padres’ lead to 8-3.
The Mets cut the lead in half with Matt Reynolds’ double in the sixth to score d’Arnaud and the lead was 8-4. Ty Kelly singled, scoring Alejandro De Aza and the lead was 8-5. Reynolds scored and cut the lead to two, 8-6. But the Padres hold off the Mets’ rally and win by two, 8-6.
Game two is tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. Jarred Cosart will start for the Padres against Mets ace Jacob DeGrom.
