August 13, 2016 (El Cajon) – Monica Zech from El Cajon has provided a list of hot happenings in the city coming up, including  anew El Cajon Walks! Meet-up group, Cajon Classic Cruise night, Island Music at the next “Dinner and a Concert,” Oktoberfest, classes, council hearings, nomination deadlines for Women in Leadership and a Veterans’ committee,  a fire station open house, free disaster preparedness class and more.

Nominations For Women In Leadership Extended To August 18

The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 14th  Annual Women in Leadership Luncheon now due by Thursday, August 18th. These awards provide an opportunity for any individual or organization to honor a special woman who has made an impact in the San Diego community. The Keynote Speaker for this year's WILL awards is Dionne Thomas a dynamic leader and role model in the wellness community with a passion to make fitness fun. ALL nominees will be recognized at the luncheon held at the Town & Country Resort Hotel on Friday, September 16th, 2016. Nomination forms can be found on the website at www.eastcountychamber.org.

Semi-Trucks Featured At The Next Cajon Classic Cruise

The theme is “Semi Truck Take Over” at the next Cajon Classic Cruise car show on Wednesday, August 17 in Downtown El Cajon!  This car show night will involve a full street closure of East Main Street between Magnolia Avenue and Claydelle Avenue, and between Magnolia Avenue and Sunshine Avenue.  See amazing semis, classic vehicles, enjoy great food, entertainment, and visit the vendors.  This fun weekly event, hosted by the Downtown Business Partners, continues every Wednesday night through October 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information, please call (619) 334-3000 or visit www.downtownelcajon.com.

Sign-Up For El Cajon Walks! Meet-up Group

If you want to enjoy the beautiful weather, explore your neighborhood and meet some new friends - then this group is for you!  Join this group for fun, safe walks around El Cajon and discover how to get to local destinations safely with great people, while building your community.  Specific walking routes will be tailored to the abilities and interests of the group, but will stay in El Cajon. Walks will be scheduled on a monthly basis on Thursday afternoons, but may vary slightly to fit the group’s needs.  Bring water, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring your sunglasses. 

The next afternoon walk begins at the Prescott Promenade on Wednesday, August 17, at 5:00 p.m.  The Promenade is located at 201 East Main Street, in Downtown El Cajon.  Meet at the flagpole.

During these scheduled walks you’ll explore various neighborhoods in El Cajon with others – and the cost is free!   Check back each week for future walks. Island Music At The Next Friday Night “Dinner & a Concert”

On Friday, August 19 at “Dinner & a Concert” at the Prescott Promenade, dance to “Upstream” playing island music!  Enjoy all the free concerts on Friday nights, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., now through October 7.  Don’t forget, the last concert of the season on October 7 will feature country music legend “Marty Stuart!”  Arrive early and dine at any one of the many great restaurants Downtown, or bring your picnic and lawn chairs. Stoney’s Kids Legacy Fundraiser

On Thursday, August 25, it’s the 25th Anniversary of Stoney’s Kids Legacy dinner and fundraiser to benefit East County youth programs!  This fun event is from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Sycuan Golf Resort, 3007 Dehesa Road, in El Cajon. Nominations For Veteran Of The Year Still Being Accepted

The City of El Cajon Veterans Commission presents a “Veteran of the Year” Award, recognizing those who go above and beyond in serving their community through their leadership abilities and/or community service in El Cajon, making a big impact on those they serve.

Final selections will be based on dedication, commitment, and demonstrated impact of those served.  If you see, hear, or know of a veteran who has gone the extra mile to improve the quality of life in the community, please take this opportunity to acknowledge and reward that effort. 

Award Criteria:

The following criteria are required for an individual to receive this special award:

•Been honorably discharged from the U.S. Military or National Guard

•City of El Cajon resident

•Made significant contributions to the community since their discharge

•Not a current Veterans Commissioner

Note: Honorable discharge supporting documentation will be required as part of the application.

Nomination and Selection Process: To nominate someone, complete a nomination form and return it to the City of El Cajon Recreation Department. Please visit http://tinyurl.com/VeteranAward to download the nomination form.  Nominations will be accepted now through September 15, 2016.

The Veterans Commission will make a final selection and notify the award recipient and his/her nominators by the last week in October. The individual selected for this award will be recognized on November 11, 2016, during the Veterans Day Celebration at the Veterans Memorial in front of City Hall.  He/she will also be presented with a “Veteran of the Year” award plaque and proclamation during an El Cajon City Council Meeting in December.  Additionally, a perpetual plaque will be displayed in the lobby at City Hall and a press release showcasing the award recipient will be distributed to all local media.  For more information, please contact the City of El Cajon Recreation Department at (619) 441-1754.

August 18 - Stop By El Cajon Farmers’ Market Every Thursday Afternoon from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The Farmers’ Market offers a wide variety of fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables, fresh baked bread, vendors and more. For more information, please visit www.elcajonfarmersmarket.org.  

August 23 - This City Council meeting has been cancelled due to the summer schedule.

August 26 and September 9 - Alternate Friday closures for El Cajon City offices.  Please go to www.cityofelcajon.us  for a full calendar of office hours for City offices during 2016.

September 5 - Labor Day - All City offices will be closed in observance.

September 30, October 1, and 2, and October 7, 8, and 9 - Oktoberfest in El Cajon!  Come and experience a real German Oktoberfest in El Cajon, hosted by the German American Societies of San Diego, Inc. Enjoy authentic German food and music! For those ages 21 and up, the entry fee is $5, but no entry fee for those under age 21 and for active duty military. This event is located at 1017 S. Free Disaster Preparedness Classes

Now is the time to prepare for the next earthquake or wildfire!  Space still available for the last East County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) disaster preparedness academy of 2016, it begins September 10. An academy consists of six classes. Once the academy begins, classes are held every other Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  These classes are free, but what you learn is priceless!  Classes are taught by members of Heartland Fire & Rescue.  Visit the East County CERT website at www.heartlandfire.org for the full 2016 CERT schedule.  If you would like to register, please call (619) 441-1737, and leave your name and best contact phone number.
