TSUNAMI WATCHES/WARNINGS ISSUED FOR HAWAII, ALASKA, CALIFORNIA, OREGON, WASHINGTON, AUSTRALIA, RUSSIA, TAIWAN, GUAM, PHLIPPINES, INDONESIA, MARIANAS ISLANDS, SOUTH AMERICA, ANTARCTICA & MORE

 

March 10, 2011 (San Diego): Updated 12:55 a.m. March 11th - A devastasting 8.9 earthquake struck Japan 231 miles northeast of Tokyo this evening. The quake is the fifth strongest in more than a century, since 1900.  Major flooding has occurred in Japan from a tidal wave that ensued. 

 

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center states that a tsunami could hit Hawaii around 2:59 a.m. (Hawaiian standard time) and reach the mainland West Coast starting around 7 a.m. in Oregon and 8:41 a.m. in La Jolla. Residents are advised to leave low-lying coastal areas and seek higher ground.  Waves can continue for an extended period after the first tsunami wave hits and the first may not be the tallest.

A tsunami warning has been issued for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas, with a tsuanmi watch issued for Guam, Taiway, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii. Many n ew regions are being added.

Several major aftershocks have also struck Japan, also causing damage. TV footage shows massie damage from the tsunami, washing away cars and buildings along the coast near the epicenter. Some injuries are reported along with at least one fatality.

 

Initial reports indicated the tsunami that hit Japan was 13 feet, however other reports have stated it was 13 meters - or over 30 feet.  It is unclear which reports are accurate, however damage is widespread in Japan, with several buildings on fire and others collapsed.
