April 9, 2016 (Denver) - Even if you don’t watch baseball, you should know how these work by now based on these recaps.  The Padres took the field at Coors for game two of their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies.  Drew Pomeranz took the mound for San Diego against Jorge “Rubby” De La Rosa for Colorado.

After days of immediate action, the bats stayed quiet for both teams in terms of runs (there were plenty of hits and walks, if you’re a fan of those) for more than two innings.  No, instead the teams waited until the third inning to start the action and then another unthinkable thing happened:  the Padres took the lead first for the first time this season on a Matt Kemp solo homer, 1-0 San Diego.

Next inning, Cory Spangenberg one-upped him and hit a three-run homer, his first home run of the season, to make the score 4-0 San Diego.  It’s as if the Padres are hypnotists waving a yin-yang in our faces saying “when we count to three, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday neeeever happened” because Kemp matched Spangenberg’s three-run homer with one of his own to make the score 7-0.

The Rockies got one back in their half of the fourth on a sac fly by Ryan Raburn that drove in Nolan Arenado.  7-1 Padres.  Pomeranz threw a wild pitch that allowed Mark Reynolds to come home and make it 7-2.

Two innings went by with nothing, then in the sixth, Kemp singled and drove in two more to extend the lead back to seven at 9-2.  Adam Rosales, pinch-hitting for the injured Yangervis Solarte, lined it to left and drove in Melvin Upton for a 10-2 Padres lead.

The Rockies got another run back in the seventh on a Carlos Gonzalez RBI single to cut the lead back to seven at 10-3.

In the ninth, Wil Myers hit his first home run of the season and tacked on one more, 11-3 Padres.  Derek Norris scored on an error and the Padres led 12-3.  Jon Jay cleared the bases with a double and a three-run RBI and the Padres were up - get this - 15-3.  Jay came home on a single from Christian Bethancourt and made the score 16-3.  That’s the first time in six years they’ve reached 16 runs in a game.

The only injury in the game was Yangervis Solarte’s pulled hamstring.  He will continue to be evaluated.  But for a team that didn’t score for 30 innnings, the Padres now have 29 runs over two games.  The last game of the series is tomorrow with James Shields on the mound for San Diego and Chad Bettis for Colorado. The Pads take game two 16-3.  Matt Kemp has a career high 10 RBI in the series.
