April 3, 2017 (Los Angeles) - Ah, Opening Day.  Probably the best time of the year besides Christmas.  The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the field is green and another Padres season is upon us.  And since the Pads failed so miserably at home on Opening Day against the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw last year, the MLB decided to see how they do on an Opening Day away from home against the Dodgers.  Jhoulys Chacin got the Opening Day nod for San Diego against Kershaw. Good luck.

The scheduling seemed to work.  In the first, Yangervis Solarte singled and scored Wil Myers to give the Padres the 1-0 lead.

But of course, the lead didn’t last long as in the second, Joc Pederson hit a sac fly to score Adrian Gonzalez and tie the game at one.

And as usual, the game slipped out of the Padres’ reach.  On Opening Day.  Pederson launched a grand slam in the bottom of the third and the Dodgers led 5-1.  Yasmani Grandal hit another home run to make the score 6-1.

The Dodgers kept adding runs.  Justin Turner doubled in the fourth to score Kershaw and LA led 7-1.  A wild pitch caused Andrew Toles to come home and make the score 8-1.  Turner scored on another wild pitch and LA was up 9-1.

Just when the Padres were about to wipe the sweat off their collective brows, Corey Seager hit a three-run homer to center and the Dodgers were in double digits with a 12-1 lead.

Ryan Schimpf tried to ease the burden in the seventh with a home run to make the score 12-2.

Manuel Margot doubled in the eighth to score Travis Jankowski and make the score 12-3, but Grandal put the nail in the coffin with a two-run homer and the Dodgers took the first game of 2017 14-3.

The Padres and Dodgers take the field for game two tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m.  Clayton Richard starts against Kenta Maeda.
