April 19, 2016 (San Diego) - A bit of culture shock in Petco Park tonight as the yinzers from Pittsburgh flew into town to take on the surfer dudes of San Diego.  But the yinzers weren’t prepared for West Coast baseball.

Colin Rea (who I just realized looks a lot like Edward Norton in Fight Club) took the mound for San Diego and the Pirates’ ace Francisco Liriano took the mound for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates struck first right away on David Freese’s single that drove in Andrew McCutchen for a 1-0 Pittsburgh lead.|

In the third, Cutch, as yinzers call him, scored on a balk and the score was 2-0.

In the fourth, Jordy Mercer singled and drove in El Coffee, Gregory Polanco, for a 3-0 lead.

The Padres got two back on Wil Myers’ third home run of the season, a line drive to left center and the score was 3-2 Pirates.

In the bottom of the fifth, Derek Norris got the Padres the lead on a two run homer and it was 4-3.  Adam Rosales hit another homer, a solo shot this time and the Padres extended their lead to 5-3.

The Padres held that lead for a while, but in typical Padre fashion, they committed a few errors because why not?  In the eighth, John Jaso hit a grounder and Josh Harrison scored on an errant missed catch by Rosales and the Pads’ lead was cut to one at 5-4.  But the good guys turned a double play and got out of a jam and hung on to win 5-4.

Cory Spangenberg sustained a strained left quad diving into first in tonight’s game.  Drew Pomeranz (only starter in the Padres’ rotation with a victory) will take the hill tomorrow for San Diego against Jeff Locke for Pittsburgh.
