September 1, 2016 (Atlanta) - The Padres hoped to start September on a much better note than they ended August. Jarred Cosart started the first game of the month against Mike Foltynewicz for Atlanta.

Not avoiding the sweep didn’t start out so well.  In the third, Freddie Freeman launched a two-run homer and the Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, Hector Sanchez narrowed the deficit with his second homer of the season to cut the lead to 2-1.

But with the bases loaded in the Braves’ half of the fifth, Freeman walked to score Foltynewicz and the Braves pulled further ahead 3-1.  Matt Kemp continued the ex-Padre tradition of bringing karma to your old team by singling to left to drive in two runs and the Braves led 5-1.  Bringing in Brad Hand did nothing; Anthony Recker drove in two on a single to right and the Braves went up 7-1.

In the sixth, Wil Myers alleviated the pain with a two-run homer and the Braves’ lead was cut to 7-3.

The Braves got away again.  Adonis Garcia doubled and scored Chase d’Arnaud and the Braves led 8-3.

In the eighth, who but Ender Inciarte came through again with a single to score Brandon Snyder and the Braves went up 9-3.

In the ninth, the Padres battled back a bit with Yangervis Solarte’s double that scored Myers and the lead was cut to 9-4.  The Poway kid came through; Alex Dickerson tripled, scoring Solarte and the Pads chipped away, 9-5.  Ryan Schimpf hit a sac fly that drove in Dickerson and the lead was three, 9-6.  But after a pitching change, the Braves saved the day and swept the Padres in San Diego’s last ever game at Turner Field.

The Padres come back to California on Friday to face the NL West-leading rival Dodgers for the weekend at Dodgers Stadium.  The first pitch is at 7:10 p.m.  Clayton Richard will face the rookie Julio Urias.
