July 5, 2016 (Phoenix) – The Padres celebrated Independence Day with a four-run win over the Diamondbacks.  They looked to get two in a row today with Christian Friedrich on the mound against Zack Godley for Arizona.

The game stayed scoreless until the third, when backup for the National League All-Stars Wil Myers tripled and scored Friedrich and the Padres went ahead 1-0.  Yangervis Solarte singled, scoring Myers and the Padres extended their lead to 2-0.

The Diamondbacks came back a bit with Paul Goldschmidt’s single in their half of the third that scored Jean Segura and cut the Padres’ lead to 2-1.  Then the kicker came up.  Rickie Weeks Jr. hit a three-run bomb to put the snakes (literally!) ahead 4-2.

Matt Kemp did bring the Padres to within one with a double in the fifth, scoring Myers and the score was 4-3 snakes.  Alex Dickerson did the rest of the honors with another double to score Kemp and tie the game at four.

But just like last night, the Dbacks were the ones that pulled out on top.  Goldschmidt hit a sac fly in the snakes’ half of the fifth to score Segura (sound familiar?) and the snakes pulled out ahead 5-4.

Segura struck again in the seventh with a single, scoring Jake Lamb and the snakes went up 6-4.  Michael Bourn tripled to right and Segura scored and the Dbacks led 7-4.

The Padres cut the lead to two in the ninth with Ryan Schimpf’s solo homer off of closer Brad Ziegler, making the score 7-5.  But that was where the rally would stop.  The Padres drop game two 7-5.

No matinee Wednesday game this week; the Padres and Dbacks will wrap up their series tomorrow night at 6:40.  Colin Rea will face Shelby Miller.

In other big Padres news, Wil Myers has been named as a reserve for the National League All-Stars in the All-Star Game at Petco Park on July 12th.  Myers is playing in his first All-Star Game.  He’s hitting .282 with 19 home runs, 57 RBIs, 18 doubles and 13 stolen bases.  Myers had a monster June, slugging 11 homers and driving in 31 runs.
