July 22, 2016 (Washington D.C.) – After a frustrating loss last night that resulted in a sweep by the Cardinals, the Padres looked to be patriotic and rebound in our nation’s capital against the Washington Nationals.  Luis Perdomo started for the Pads against Tanner Roark for the Nats.

The Padres learned from their past mistakes and struck early with Matt Kemp’s solo homer in the first for a 1-0 lead.

But the Padres’ head start in the first was erased when Jayson Werth hit a solo homer of his own in the Nationals’ half of the first to tie the game at one.  Wilson Ramos singled, driving in Bryce Harper and the Nats took a 2-1 lead.

The Padres tied the game in the fifth on a single from Melvin Upton Jr. that scored new dad Brett Wallace and the score was 2-2.  Then the Padres did what teams have been doing to them for so long.  Matt Kemp blasted a three-run homer and just like that, the Padres went up 5-2.

The bats stayed quiet until the eighth when the hero of the 2015 playoffs, Daniel Murphy, hit a solo homer off of reliever Brad Hand to make the score 5-3 Pads.  But the Padres prevailed and took game one in our nation’s capital.  That’s the American way.

Another 4:05 p.m. start awaits tomorrow.  Edwin Jackson will start against Max Scherzer, who has recorded a 20-strikeout game this season.
