March 21, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – Rev. Don Hamer, former pastor of Sonrise Community Church in Santee and Zion Christian Fellowship in San Diego, died Wednesday, March 17 of a heart attack.

An e-mail circulated by the family to media and community groups said that Hamer passed away “during his morning devotions” with a family member at his side. “We are deeply saddened by this loss and ask that you join his family in prayer at this time,” the statement added.

Hamer was also president of Kuyper Preparatory School, a private Christian institution.  "The school's mission mirrors Don's life--humble, excellent and provacative--with his eyes set on the Kingdom of God," Ron Prentice stated in a post at the California Family Council website. The African-American minister was a speaker at religious conferences and gatherings.

He drew controversy in recent years for participating in a video campaign by the Christian Anti-Defamation League that attacked President Barack Obama’s Christianity. He also founded Better Courts Now, a Chula Vista-based group that seeks to elect judges who oppose abortion and same-sex marriages.

A memorial service is planned for Monday, March 22 at 1 p.m. at Sonrise Community Church, 8805 North Magnolia Avenue in Santee.

Hamer is survived by his wife, Theresa, and five children: Stephanie, Sheridan, Joseph, D.C. and Phillip. A living memorial site has been established at http://www.donhamer.com.
