January 27, 2011 (Deerhorn Valley) – Daniel Alphonse Ignosci, a retired San Diego Fire Department captain and long-time resident of Deerhorn Valley, died January 7, 2011 at age 70.

All flags in the SDFD district flew at half-mast on Thursday, January 13, to honor Captain Ignosci’ss 35 years of service and the flag flown above Station 13, his last assignment, was presented to his wife at services held January 15 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Jamul.

Born in July, 1940 at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, Ignosci graduated from Hoover High School in 1958. He enlisted in the Army in 1959, serving in Korea as a sentry dog handler with the military police K-9 corps. In 1967, he joined the San Diego Fire Department, where he was promoted to engineer in 1973 and captain in 1977, retiring in 2002 after 35 years of service.

His hobbies including fishing and collecting classic cars. He was most proud of a 602-pound black marlin caught on a trip to Ecuador.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Jo (Lowenstein), sons Daniel Jr. (Joan) and Michael John (Lisa), and four grandsons: Cal, Brooks, John, and Tyler, who Daniel “loved to the top of the clouds.” He also leaves relatives Dan Garske (Carmen) and Gordon Garske (Frances), the Deerhorn Valley Community, and his Fire Department Family. He now joins Joey, his beloved Aussie, on Rainbow Bridge.

“Daniel and Sandra have been key members of the Deerhorn Community since first arriving here more than a decade ago,” wrote Kim Hamilton in the Deerhorn Valley News, which she publishes along with with Rob Deason.  Hamilton said Ignosci was “a true neighbor who would drop anything to give you a hand. His last offer to us was to help with moving a 450 lb woodstove out of the house! I guess for a guy who could land a 602 lb marlin, he thought that was a piece of cake. You never had to ask where you stood with Daniel... he would let you know, ready or not. Honesty and honor were his measures.”

She added, “We send a special message to his four young grandsons: He did indeed love you all "to the top of the clouds."

Ignosci’s son, Dan, has posted a video tribute to his father here: http://vimeo.com/18848879.
