PHOTOS OF THE WEEK: FALL BIRDS

September 27, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – Eric Kallen sent in photos of migrating birds stopping off in East County.  Here are his notes:

Indigo Bunting (cover photo).  Rare in San Diego County.  Usually seen in May and June.  Species is expanding its range and singing males are occasionally seen. 

Lazuli Bunting (right).  Relatively common locally in Jacumba.  This species breeds in the Lagunas.  This bird is in its usual non-breeding plumage.

Lawrence’s Goldfinches (below).  Male (above) and female birds. They like native sunflower seed heads in the fall and especially the seeds of Fiddleneck weeds in the Spring.
