October 11 Event to Benefit Canine Corners Dog Park in La Mesa

October 9, 2014 (La Mesa)--Dog owners: Dress yourself and canine companion(s) in Halloween costume and come to the second annual “Pooch in the Park” Fun Dog Show to be held Saturday, October 11, from 9 am to noon at Canine Corners Dog Park in Harry Griffen Regional Park, located at 9550 Milden Street, in La Mesa.  Entrance to the event is free; the contest entrance fee is $20 for up to two dogs.

La Mesa Mayor Art Madrid and the La Mesa City Council have designated October 11 as “Pooch in the Park Day.”

Contests will be for best costume, biggest dog, smallest dog, best service dog, best trick, and best of show.  Winners will receive trophies, and there will also be raffle prizes.  “For dog owners who come in costume, there are no specific categories or prizes, just the happiness of a Saturday morning in the park with your little buddy,” said event organizer Glenna Bloemen.

At 10:30 am the La Mesa Police Department will conduct a demonstration by a drug-sniffing dog.  Also at the event will be the representatives of the Humane Society Animal Rescue, the American Kennel Clubs and there will be other educational displays for caring for your pet.

Hosted by the Kiwanis Clubs of La Mesa, Fletcher Hills and Lake Murray and by the City of La Mesa Human Relations Commission, Pooch in the Park is a fundraiser to benefit Canine Corners Dog Park, a no-leash section of Griffen Park. In addition to Kiwanis Club members, volunteer organizations staffing the event include Target employees, Helix High Key Club and Helix High Science Club.

Event sponsors include Wells Fargo, VCA Grossmont Animal Hospital, Unleashed by Petco, and Momentos Café.  Raffle sponsors include Wells Fargo, Walmart, Target, Radio Shack, and Marshalls.
