September 8 (Thursday, 7:3 0 pm) — Warwick's is hosting author Scott Stambach to discuss and sign his novel, The Invisible Life of Ivan Isaenko. Scott Stambach lives in San Diego where he teaches physics and astronomy at Grossmont and Mesa colleges.
Seventeen-year-old Ivan Isaenko is a life-long resident of the Mazyr Hospital for Gravely Ill Children in Belarus. Born deformed, yet mentally keen with a frighteningly sharp wit, strong intellect, and a voracious appetite for books, Ivan is forced to interact with the world through the vivid prism of his mind. For the most part, every day is exactly the same for Ivan. That is until the seventeen-year-old Polina arrives at the hospital. At first, Ivan resents Polina. She steals his books. She challenges his routine. The nurses like her. But eventually, he is drawn to her and the two forge a romance that is tenuous and beautiful and everything they never dared dream of. And now Ivan wants something, whereas before he survived by being utterly detached from things and people: Ivan wants Polina to live.
Hilarious and full of heart, The Invisible Life of Ivan Isaenko is a story about finding hope within the most desperate of circumstances, and it is one that readers won’t soon forget.

September 10 (Saturday, 7:00 pm) — Boston poet Richard Martin will read from his new books Techniques in the Neighborhood of Sleep, and Buffoons in the Gene Pool at D.G.Wills Books, 7461 Girard Avenue, La Jolla, 858-456-1800, www.dgwillsbooks.com.
“The lines of Richard Martin’s poems have the crisp offhandedness of wire brushes deftly applied to drum skin. Indeed, they are musical, sensational and breed philosophical considerations. The lines seem to want to slip by unassumingly but that you pause on them because the words they are written in recall so appropriately a world you know – a world that they illuminate and thus add to, rather than describe. Whole poems work that way, with a power and fascination that seem to have come from nowhere, or just around the corner.” — Bill Berkson
September 10 (Saturday, 2:00 pm) — Alex Marwood signs the new book The Dark Secret. Alex Marwood won the Edgar Award for her debut thriller, The Wicked Girls, and the Macavity Award for her sophomore effort, The Killer Next Door. Alex opens The Darkest Secret with Maria Gavlia’s 2004 email: “Apologies for the general email, but I desperately need your help. My goddaughter, Coco Jackson, disappeared from her family's holiday home in Bournemouth on the night of Sunday/Monday August 29/30th, the bank holiday weekend just gone. Coco is three years old.” A dozen years later Coco’s twin sister, Milly, is informed of their father’s death. Alex alternates between two timelines to build a twisted domestic noir tale of secrets and suspense.
From Edgar Award winner Alex Marwood comes another gripping psychological thriller. When a child goes missing at an opulent house party, it makes international news. But what really happened to Coco Jackson?
Real estate mogul Sean Jackson is throwing himself a splashy fiftieth birthday party, but trouble starts almost immediately: His ex-wife has sent his teenage daughters to the party without telling him; his current wife has fired the nanny; and he's finding it difficult to sneak away to his mistress. Then something truly terrible happens: one of his three-year-old twins goes missing. No trace of her is ever found. The attendees of the party, nicknamed the Jackson Associates by the press, become infamous overnight.
Twelve years later, Sean is dead. The Jackson Associates assemble for the funeral, together for the first time since that fateful weekend. Soon the barbed comments and accusations are flying. By the end of the weekend, one will be dead. And one of Sean's daughters will make a shocking discovery.

September 11 (Sunday, 10:30 am- 12:30 pm) — The Good Earth / Great Chefs and The Chino Farm are pleased to host a book launch celebration for San Diego author Tershia d’Elgin and her book The Man Who Thought He Owned Water: On the Brink with American Farms, Cities, and Food. San Diego has more small farms than any county in the nation. This gripping, personal tale of farm water policies and urban development takes on one of the gravest challenges of our time and provides essential background about farms, food, and water in the West, which is a concern of all of us in San Diego.
Enchanting and informative, The Man Who Thought He Owned Water is an appeal for urban-rural cooperation over water in our pursuit of resiliency.
