THE MARCH FOR EVERYBODY ELSE
By Roger Coppock
April 29, 2017 (San Diego) -- Last Saturday, April the 22nd. 15,000 people joined a March for Science in San Diego to protest anti-science, mostly anti-climate science, policies of the new Trump administration. (Please see our report: http://eastcountymagazine.org/print/24751) Today, by contrast, was everybody else's turn to participate in "The People's Climate March." According to San Diego Police estimates, 4,000 to 5,000 people took up this Saturday's cause, or about a third as many marched last weekend when there were also Earth Day activities in the vicinity.
Whereas each of the Science March participants created their own protest signs and snappy slogans, many people's climate marchers used signs provided to them, including mass printed signs handed out at the event. I also saw some signs from last week's demonstration resurrected for a second life for this week. This demonstration provided entertainment, including music and dance. The scientists, a much more serious crowd, had almost none.
In this observer's humble opinion, it is a shame that these two groups are splitting. They need each other. Imagine what a demonstration they could create if they worked together.
