July 31, 2011 (San Diego)--The original (Boston) Tea Party was staged by area businessmen, who hired and organized a bunch of thugs and drifters to disguise themselves as Indians and destroy the cargos of East Indian Company ships. The parallels with today’s Tea Party are striking, but I fear the ultimate outcome will be less desirable.
The leaders and elected representatives of today’s Tea Party are a bunch of ignorant, irresponsible ideologues funded and organized by wealthy business men (merchants) such as the Koch Brothers. These conservative business men are bent on destroying the social safety net fabricated during the great depression.
Will we be as pleased with the outcome of this “revolution” as with the outcome of the revolution against the British? I think not; in fact I would characterize the conservative efforts to reform our society as revolting, not revolutionary.
