Whether it is Carmen's story, the young beauty, daughter of gypsies and hated by the San Diego townspeople, then, under Mexican rule; or Floriana, a Spanish belle with a surprisingly spooky and unfortunate past; or Magdalena and Reyes, a Mestiza and a young Spanish Presidio Soldier with a secret. January 26 (Monday, 6:30 pm)At the every 4th Monday meeting of the San Diego Writers/Editors Guild, The speaker is Kathi Diamant: The Art of Giving and Receiving Critiques. Kathi Diamant, whom you may remember from watching KPBS, who also writes, teaches writing at SDSU Osher Institute, and has researched world-wide on behalf of The Kafka Project, will be our speaker in January. She will share with members the art of giving and receiving critiques of our work – a crucial skill for any writer. Critiques should not discourage a vulnerable writer; benefit from critiques requires an open mind and heart.

What should a reader look for when reading a work, wanting his/her comments to be helpful to the writer? Realizing what you say as well as how you say it are both important; are there perspectives for the reader and writer to keep in mind? Are there guidelines that might be used in your read and critique group? Perhaps Kathi can be persuaded to also share her work on Kafka’s Last Love, and the travels, research and people around the world she has met while writing the story of Dora Diamant, and adding previously unknown letters and papers to the history of this influential writer. See you Jan. 26th!

A $5 donation from non-members is recommended. For additional information, go to: http://sdwritersguild.org/.
