March 2, 2017 (San Diego) - The back-to-back Mountain West champion San Diego State football team has released its 2017 schedule. Game times and television arrangements, including moves to non-Saturdays will be announced at a later date.

The Aztecs are coming off an 11-3 season, knocking off Wyoming, 27-24, in the MW Championship game and Houston, 34-10, in the Las Vegas Bowl, to finish with a No. 25 ranking in both the AP Top 25 poll and the Amway Coaches Poll. It is just the second time that SDSU has been ranked in the final AP poll in program history (also 1977). The 11 wins tied a school single-season record as San Diego State became the first team in program history with back-to-back 11-win campaigns.

The Aztecs open their 2017 slate on Sept. 2 at Qualcomm Stadium against UC Davis, which is coming off a 3-8 season. SDSU and the Aggies have never met.

San Diego State hits the road for the first time on Sept. 9 when it plays at Arizona State. The Sun Devils were 5-7 last year, missing a bowl game for the first time since 2010. The Aztecs are 0-10-1 all-time in the series with ASU, last falling at home in 2002 by a 39-28 score.

SDSU plays its second straight Pac-12 foe a week later (Sept. 16) at home against Stanford. The Cardinal, which finished 10-3 last year, including a 25-23 win over North Carolina in the Sun Bowl, is the only team from the state of California with a better record since 2010 than San Diego State at 76-18 (.809) (the Aztecs are 63-30 (.677)). SDSU is 1-3 all-time vs. Stanford, including a 31-10 loss the last time the two teams met in Palo Alto, Calif., in 1988.

San Diego State begins its defense of the MW title Sept. 23 at Air Force. It will be the earliest conference game for the Aztecs since also playing the Falcons in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Sept. 10, 2005. SDSU has won six consecutive games against AFA, including a 27-24 victory in San Diego in the 2015 MW Championship game. Air Force was 10-3 overall last year and 5-3 in league play, beating South Alabama, 45-21, in the Arizona Bowl.

San Diego State wraps up its non-conference slate Sept. 30 with a home game against Northern Illinois. The Aztecs beat the Huskies, 42-28, last Sept. 17 in DeKalb, Ill., and now are 5-0 all-time in the series. NIU won four of its final five games to finish 5-7 overall (5-3 in Mid-American Conference).

SDSU resumes MW play Oct. 7 at UNLV. It will be the first time that San Diego State played its first two conference games on the road since 2007. The Aztecs downed the Rebels, 26-7, last year at home and have won six of the past seven meetings in the series. SDSU is 12-3 against UNLV since 2002 and 17-9 all-time in the series. The Rebels were 4-8 overall and 3-5 in MW action.

San Diego State starts the second half of its season, a stretch that will see the Aztecs play at home in four of the six games, Oct. 14 against Boise State at Qualcomm Stadium. SDSU and the Broncos have each won two games apiece in the series with BSU rallying from a 20-0 deficit to beat San Diego State, 38-29, in the last meeting in Boise, Idaho, on Nov. 15, 2014.

The Aztecs then play host to Fresno State on Oct. 21. SDSU has won the past two meetings, including a 17-3 win in Fresno, Calif., last year. The Bulldogs, which played in the MW championship game in 2013-14 and tied for a share of the conference title in 2012 with San Diego State and Boise State (split divisions (West and Mountain) started in 2013), were winless in league play last year at 0-8 and 1-11 overall. The Aztecs leads the all-time series with FS 29-23-4.

SDSU hits the road on Oct. 28 for a showdown at Hawai’i. San Diego State defeated the Rainbow Warriors, 55-0, last year at Qualcomm Stadium, has won five straight in the series and is 20-9-2 in all-time meetings. UH won its final three games last year, including a 52-35 win over Middle Tennessee in the Hawai’i Bowl, to finish 7-7 overall (4-4 in league play).

The Aztecs wrap up their road campaign on Nov. 4 when they travel to San José State. SDSU beat the Spartans, 42-3, last year at home and have won each of the past four meetings in the series. The all-time series is tied at 19-19-2. SJSU went onto finish last season with a 4-8 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in league play.

After its lone bye of the season on Nov. 11, San Diego State finishes the regular season with a pair of home games, starting Nov. 18 against Nevada. The Aztecs ran past the Wolf Pack, 46-16, last year in Reno, Nev. Nevada was 5-7 and 3-5 in MW play a year ago. SDSU leads the all-time series with the Wolf Pack by a 6-3 margin.

San Diego State concludes the 2016 regular season at home on Nov. 25 vs. New Mexico. The Lobos capped a 9-4 season (6-2 MW) with a 23-20 win over UTSA in the New Mexico Bowl. The Aztecs lead the all-time series with UNM, 25-15, and have won five consecutive games in the series, including a 24-14 win in Albuquerque, N.M., in the last meeting in 2014.

The fifth conference championship game will take place on Dec. 2 and will match the winner of the West Division (San Diego State, Fresno State, Hawai’i, Nevada, San José State and Nevada) and the Mountain Division (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming) at the highest-ranked division champion.
