Aztecs beat Cincinnati, but lose to UC Davis

By Ryan Schuler

February 23, 2012 (San Diego)--Friday, February 17, 2012 served as a very important day for the San Diego State women’s lacrosse program. Not only did the Aztecs host their first home game in program history, but they also scored their first win ever. This is their first season at the Division I level.

SDSU would outscore Cincinnati 9-4 in the second half to claim a 14-9 win, and even their season record to 1-1. Freshman Bailey Ewing led the team with five points, including four goals and one assist, while freshman Sophie Koubek added four goals.

“I was so nervous coming onto the field,” Ewing said to goaztecs.com after the match. “My heart was beating so fast, but when we started, I just got used to the pace, and I think our whole team got used to it. We worked so hard for the 60 minutes, and I think we did an awesome job today.”
SDSU’s team, which consists of 24 freshmen, three sophomores and one junior are still adjusting to life at the Division I level, but show a lot of promise and potential.

“They (the Aztecs) played with heart and they played together,” SDSU head lacrosse coach Kylee White said to goaztecs.com after Friday’s victory. “They played so well tonight. Winning our first home game was actually one of our first goals, so moving forward we can kind of focus in on what’s to come.”

The Aztecs would not be so lucky on Sunday, falling to UC Davis in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener, 18-7. With the loss, SDSU’s record dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in MPSF action.

UC Davis would take the 8-4 lead after 30 minutes of play scoring the first three goals of the game and outshooting SDSU 22-11 in the first half. The Aggies would hold leads of 10-5 and 12-6 before finally scoring six unanswered goals to end the game.
SDSU would be led in scoring by sophomore Meris Walsh with three goals and freshman Sophie Koubek with two goals. Freshmen Madeline Ross and Jackie Mills each contributed one goal.

The Aztecs’ next game is at home on Saturday, March 2, 2012 at 7 p.m. against St. Mary’s.
