September 6, 2016 (Santee) - Santee’s annual Bluegrass Festival is a wine, beer and food tasting mixed with music and assorted fundraising activities, including a treasure-filled opportunity drawing and silent action.

People come for the fun and frivolity, but they leave behind substantial funds to support valuable ‘I’ community programs such as staffing for the Santee Teen Center.

“The festival was born during the Great Recession, when funding for local recreation programs was threatened by shrinking government budgets,” said Bree Humphrey, Santee’s special events supervisor. “While the economy has improved, the festival still provides critical funding for much-needed programs that benefit the entire city.”

Since the inaugural charity event in 2010, the festival has generated more than $185,000, and attendance has more than quadrupled to 1,300 attendees.

Proceeds from the one-night festival are used to subsidize recreation scholarship programs for seniors and low-and moderate-income families, and provide annual operating funds for the Santee Teen Center. Festival funds have also financed the installation of pickleball courts at Big Rock Park, a disc golf course at Mast Park and the citywide painting of murals to beautify unsightly utility boxes.

The Annual Santee Bluegrass Festival is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Town Center Community Park East, 550 Park Center Drive.

This year’s musical lineup features two talented bluegrass bands, the Homesick Hitcher and MohaviSoul. Admission entitles ticket holders to sample several varieties of wine, beer from numerous craft breweries, and food prepared by local restaurants. Festival attendees will receive a logo-marked plastic cup for beverage sampling.

Beyond the music and libations, the event includes a silent auction featuring a wide range of donated gifts, including musical instruments and gift certificates for restaurants and local attractions. Attendees can also purchase opportunity drawing tickets for a chance to win donated prizes.

Advance tickets are $45 per person. If the event is not sold out, tickets may be available at the door for $50. Attendees who do not intend to consume alcoholic beverages may purchase a designated driver ticket for $35.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.cityosanteeca.gov or in person at Santee City Hall, Community Services Department, Building 6, 10601 Magnolia Avenue.
