November 14, 2010 (Santee) -- The city of Santee is doing its part to prevent the holidays from becoming ho-ho-ho-hum.A special events team from the Community Services Department has choreographed an event that features some unlikely holiday pairings: Santa Claus, live Doo-wop music, skating on synthetic ice, and an old-fashioned horse-and-carriage ride.
The blend of old and new acknowledges the 30th anniversary of Santee’s incorporation as a city as well as the 8th Annual Holiday Lighting Celebration Friday, Nov. 19 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Santee’s Trolley Square shopping center near the intersection of Cuyamaca Street and Mission Gorge Road.
“Last year, many folks turned out for this festive event and had a great time,” said Cherie Meek, the city’s special events supervisor. “This year is a little bit special because we’re honoring our 30th year as a city and, at the same time, kicking off the holiday season.”
The Holiday Lighting Celebration is focused around the lighting of a 20-foot artificial tree, which last year was witnessed by thousands of delighted residents and visitors.
With the wave of a faux magic wand, the tree’s holiday lights will flash on. For a guaranteed “ooh-ahh” moment, pyrotechnic sparklers will shoot into the air as the bulbs transform the tree into a pyramid of light. At the same instant the tree is lighted, entry monuments at four major intersections will come aglow with decorative lights.
The Corvettes will play live Doo-wop and Motown tunes. Costumed characters will entertain the kids, who can also participate in free crafts and cookie decorating. Free cake will be handed out to celebrate Santee’s 30th year as a city. A choir from a local church will perform at 6:30 p.m.
Children will be able to confide their wish lists to Santa. Professional photos with the jolly guy will be available for $10.
Horse-drawn carriage rides will be available for $2 per person, except for children 3 years or younger, who may ride for free. For a $3 fee, children 5 years and older, as well as adults, can glide on ice skates across a 2,400-square-foot synthetic surface.
Title sponsor for the event is Waste Management Inc. Participating sponsors include California Coast Credit Union, Daphne’s Greek Café and Santee Trolley Square. In-kind contributions will be provided by Fireworks America, Lowe’s, Target, Eccentric International Chefs and Bakery, Bay City Electric Works and Lakeside Poultry.
