December 12, 2015 (San Diego)--On December 15th the San Diego City Council will vote on the City of San Diego's ambitious Climate Action Plan. In response, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) issued the following media statement:

“SDG&E has a long history of partnering with the City of San Diego to lower the city’s carbon footprint. In fact, we recently celebrated the completion of a six-year sustainability effort with the City of San Diego, San Diego Green Building Council and Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, which reduced Balboa Park’s greenhouse gas emissions by 5,549 metric tons each year—the environmental equivalent of taking nearly 1,000 cars off the road.

Cars are a major source of air pollutants, and as a company we’re leading the way in transitioning to alternative fuel vehicles. This includes the ‘Race to 500’, in which SDG&E committed to becoming one of the first Southern California businesses to have 500 employees use electric vehicles as their primary form of transportation.

We’re also working aggressively to increase the amount of renewable energy used by San Diego and southern Orange County homes and businesses. Today, SDG&E is the only utility in California to deliver 33 percent of its energy from renewable sources and is committed to increasing this amount to 50 percent by 2030. And, the company has led the state in its efforts to reach the limit on the current rooftop solar program by helping connect more than 72,000 solar customers—more per capita than any other utility in California.

It is for these reasons that SDG&E supports Mayor Faulconer’s Climate Action Plan, which strikes a sensible balance between protecting our environment and our growing economy. We commend the city for its flexibility, and the importance the plan places on achieving the greatest carbon reductions at the least cost. We look forward to continued partnership with the City of San Diego as we work to reach the common goal of bettering the lives of all San Diegans.”

The City's climate action plan outlines five strategies for reducing emissions, including constructing more energy and water efficient buildings, promoting cycling, public transit and walking over commuting in vehicles, and transitioning the city to only using renewable energy in 20 years.
