July 21, 2017 (Jamul) – At last month’s Jamul-Dulzura Planning Group meeting, concerns were raised over Sunrise Powerlink Mitigation grants – specifically, why some homes near the high voltage line in Deerhorn Valley received no grant money, while homes in Alpine further area where added to the eligible area for grants and did receive funds. Questions have also been raised as to why Alpine has representation on the Sunrise Powerlink Fire Mitigation Board, but Deerhorn Valley/Jamul does not.

Allison Torres, communications manager for SDG&E, advised ECM via email, “SDG&E is a non-voting member of the Sunrise Powerlink Fire Mitigation Board (SPFMB) and we do not run, administer or make any grant decisions. Our only role is to fund the program, which we have been doing.”

She adds, “Since we are not a voting member of the board, I would encourage you and residents to contact your local fire chief who participates. For the community of Jamul/Dulzura, I believe your representative is the County Fire Authority Chief. It makes sense because these local fire chiefs are the experts out in the field and are the ones who know where the money is needed and who it should be awarded to.

Another contact is Don Butz, Fire Chief of Lakeside who is currently the board leader of SPFMB at this time.”
