October 1, 2011 (San Diego) – San Diego Police Officer Jason Prokop was struck and killed early this morning while attempting to come to the aid of a motorist after his vehicle struck a stopped car ahead of him. He was off duty at the time, said Lt. Andra Brown. A five-year veteran of the police force, Prokop was married and leaves behind a toddler and an infant, ECM News partner 10 News reports.

The tragedy involved four separate crashes, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Armando Cass told the Union-Tribune. After Prokop’s vehicle struck the stopped car around 3:15 a.m., a third car sideswiped the first vehicle. Two other vehicles swerved to avoid the accident scene and also crashed . Prokop exited his vehicle to offer aid to the driver of the first car, when he was struck and killed by a southbound vehicle.

I-15 southbound was shut down in the Mira Mesa area until 11:30 a.m. while an investigation was conducted.

Prokop was assigned to SDPD's Central Division since July, 2007.

"Another citizen soldier has made the ultimate sacrifice doing what he did best, serving his community.
