August 6, 2014 (San Diego)--San Diego State University is launching  a new program aimed at empowering music studies to run successful businesses.

Open to students in all music disciplines, from classical voice to jazz and composition, the Music Entrepreneurship and Business Program is a professional bachelor of music degree with a specialization in entrepreneurship.

An article by Beth Downing Chee posted at SDSU’s news center reports that the program is  a partnership between the College of Business Administration and the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts

Associate Dean Donna Conaty says students need help in today’s highly competitive environment and that the new program will provide them with confidence and skills to be successful entrepreneurs.

While other colleges around the nation offer programs geared to help musicians in commercial music fields gain entrepreneurship skills, SDSU is believed to be the first university in the nation open to any artistically qualified student, Conatay says.

Only the beginning

If successful, the program could become a model for other departments on campus, such as design, theater and film to boost career opportunities for creative students through similar entrepreneurship programs.
