March 24, 2017 (Fort Collins, Colo.) - San Diego State used 16 hits to down Colorado State, 9-4, in the series opener Friday at Colorado State. Down by a 4-3 margin, the Aztecs (18-11, 2-2 MW) scored the final six runs of the game and got out of multiple jams to secure the win.

The Rams (13-10, 1-3 MW) jumped out with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a double by Lauren Buchanan and a single by Taryn Arcarese.

SDSU got on the scoreboard in the top of the second as Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.) tripled and scored when Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) reached on an error by CSU pitcher Bridgette Hutton. Later in the inning Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) put San Diego State on top with a two-out, two-run single up the middle, plating Ignacio and Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.).

Colorado State took back the lead in the third when it scored on an error and on a fielder’s choice grounder.

The Aztecs answered in the fourth with a bases loaded, two-run single by Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) with one out that plated Ignacio and Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.). SDSU, however, was unable to get another runners across the plate, stranding two.

The Rams threatened in the bottom half of the fifth with a leadoff single and, after a strikeout, reaching on an error. Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.), however, replaced starter Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.) in the circle and got Arcarese to ground out and Francesca Olivas to strike out to end the threat.

San Diego State stretched its lead in the sixth with a three-run home run by Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.). It was Stewart’s second homer of the season.

CSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on two singles and a walk, but Formby got Buchanan to pop up to Byrd at second base on the first pitch to keep Colorado State at four runs.

The Aztecs added one more run in the seventh as Ignacio singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Peres double.

Four SDSU players had three hits apiece, including Byrd, Cable, Ignacio and Peres. Byrd added two RBIs, a run and a walk, Cable drove in a pair of runs, Ignacio scored three times and doubled, and Peres recorded an RBI, run and a double.

Moreno (7-4) got the win after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. She struck out four. Formby picked up her third save of the season, tossing 2 2/3 innings of relief. She gave up three hits and two walks, while striking out four.
