March 7, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State overcame a wobbly start Tuesday to register its fourth straight victory with a 5-2 triumph over visiting Detroit Mercy in a non-conference game at SDSU Softball Stadium. With the win, the Aztecs raise their record to 12-7 on the year, while the Titans slip to 3-15 overall.

SDSU pitcher Maria Moreno picked up the victory in 5 2/3 innings of relief after entering the game with one out in the top of the second. The Aztec freshman allowed no runs on three hits while  striking out six to move to 6-2 on the season.

UDM drew first blood with two outs in the first when Jordan Manno advanced home on a double-steal attempt, crossing the plate before Courtney Gilbert was caught retreating back to first base.  The Titans padded their lead in the second after Alyssa James doubled home Savvy Ferstle, who led off with a walk. After James was thrown out at third on the play, Moreno spelled Aztec starter Julie McDonald at this juncture, posting two strikeouts sandwiched around a single by Grace Schmeiser.

The Aztecs plated three runs in the third inning, with junior Zaria Meshack driving home Shelby Thompson and pinch-runner Kristen Parker with a two-out single up the middle. Earlier, Thompson knocked in another pinch-runner Aris Metcalfe with a single of her own through the left side.

Nursing a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, SDSU gave itself some insurance when Sydnee Cable belted a two-run homer over the left centerfield fence to put the hosts up 5-2.

The Titans put two runners aboard in the sixth following singles by Manno and Edrienne Williams. However with two down, Moreno induced a fly-out to right by Ferstle to end the threat.

Titans’ starter Ashley Mauser was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits, before giving way to reliever Liz Murphy, who ceded two runs on three hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings of work.

In addition to Meshack and Cable’s heroics, the Aztec cause was also aided by a 2-for-3 performance by Orlando.

San Diego State returns to the field on Thursday when it travels to Orange County to face host Cal State Fullerton in the first game of the Louiville Slugger Invitational. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.
