March 4, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego Classic I continued tonight as SDSU softball took on Miami University of Ohio.  Junior Alex Formby started on the mound for the Aztecs against senior Carly Mortensen for the Redhawks.

The Aztecs learned their lesson from Thursday night and got started right away.  Junior catcher Jenavee Peres blasted a two-run bomb, her third of the season, in the bottom of the first and the Aztecs jumped out to a 2-0 lead early.  True freshman shortstop Shelby Thompson smacked a three-run homer and SDSU was up 5-0.  Senior right fielder Jaylene Ignacio joined in on the home run party with a solo shot and the Aztecs were up 6-0 in a matter of seconds and kicked Mortensen out of the game.

The Redhawks made their mark on the board in the second with junior third baseman Kat Lee’s two-run home run off the right field wall, but the Aztecs still led 6-2.

That didn't faze the Aztecs, who added two insurance runs in their half of the second with the Redhawks’ freshman Jaime Scher on the mound.  First, sophomore third baseman Molly Sturdivant hit an RBI double.  That was followed up by junior designated player Taylor Stewart's RBI single on an errant throw to first by the Redhawks and the Aztecs ended the second frame up 8-2.  The Redhawks ended it with three errors.

Miami-Ohio added a run in the third when Sturdivant bobbled a routine grounder at third and the Aztecs led by five, 8-3.

West Hills High grad Katie Byrd decided that wasn't enough.  In the sixth, the sophomore second baseman hit a solo home run to make the score 9-3 Aztecs.  Peres hit her second home run of the game and the back-to-back home runs gave SDSU a 10-3 win.

The Redhawks added one more in the seventh when Peres tried to pick off sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman at second and the throw was bad, causing a run to come in, but the Aztecs stopped the rally and came away with a 10-4 win and a 10-7 season record.

The Classic ends tomorrow morning as SDSU faces UC Davis.  First pitch is at 11:30 a.m.
