April 6, 2018 (San Diego) - The San Diego State Track & Field team won the inaugural Mountain West Challenge at the Aztrack Sports Deck Friday afternoon. The Aztecs took first place in six of the 16 events they competed in and had 17 top-three finishes overall. They finished the day with 158 points, edging out UNLV (145), Nevada (144) and San Jose State (86).

Lisa-Anne Barrow highlighted the day for the Aztecs. She took first in the long jump, clearing 20’ 9.25” on her final jump, which is a personal record and the second best mark in Aztec history (Karoline Koehler; 21’ 9.50” in 2009). Barrow also took second in the 200 meter dash with a time of wind-aided time of 23.30 and helped the Aztecs win both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Bonnie Draxler, who is competing unattached while redshirting during the outdoor season, had a personal best mark in the pole vault, clearing 14’ 3.5” (4.36m) for first place. This would’ve tied the all-time program record had Draxler been competing in the Scarlet and Black.

Ashley Henderson had a first place finish in her first 100 meter dash of the outdoor season. She had a wind-aided time of 11.12 while also completing a comeback as the anchor leg in the 4x100 relay.

Angela Wilson continued her strong season with a first place finish in the 800 meter run. She finished in 2:15.48 for her second first place finish of the season.

Melody Harris won the javelin throw with a mark of 148-09 (45.33m), besting her closest competition by over three feet.

Je’Neal Ainsworth finished in second and was the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump. Ainsworth has finished in the top two in four straight meets, while improving her mark every time. On Friday, she cleared 40-9.50, a season-best.

Other top three Aztec finishes included: Callista Fletcher (100m; 11.78w) Jalyn Harris (200m; 23.32w), Tyra Lea (400m; 55.22), Cindy Flores (800m; 2:18.37), Cassidy Towner (1500m, 4:39.38), Jasmine Young (400m hurdles; 1:01.58), Anushi Desai (discus; 148-2.0), Coryne McKenney (discus; 146-1) and Rachel Craft (pole vault; 12-4.5)

THE NOTE I

Barrow has set a PR in the long jump in back-to-back weeks. However her 20-9.25 mark on Friday eclipsed her previous best by 9.5” and is the fifth best distance in the nation this season.

THE NOTE II

This was the first women’s-only meet San Diego State has hosted since 1982.

QUOTE OF THE MEET

“Arguably the best day I’ve ever had! I knew it was there, I just had to get the right jump. I’m comfortable when we have meets here. It feels like practice.” – Lisa-Anne Barrow

UP NEXT

The Aztecs will head across town next weekend to compete at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday.
