CSU remains undefeated in MW play

October 15, 2016 (Fort Collins, Colo.) - League leader Colorado State proved to be too much to handle for San Diego Stat as the Aztecs dropped a three-set match (21-15, 25-21, 25-16) to the Rams Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena in Fort Collins.
The loss dropped SDSU’s record to 12-17 overall and 4-3 in the Mountain West as it dropped back-to-back matches for only the second time this season. The rams, meanwhile, won for the seventh straight time to improve to 13-5 overall and 7-0 in conference action.
Senor Alexis Cage led San Diego State with 10 kills while teammates Deja Harris and Ashlynn Dunbar contributed 10 apiece.
No SDSU player hit better than .250 over three sets as the Aztecs turned in a team attack percentage of just .042 due in part of the Ram’s defensive play at the net that saw them record 10 team blocks. Colorado State ended the afternoon with a .321 team hitting mark.
In the opening set, the home side scored the first two points and led the remainder of the contest. SDSU was within three at 11-8, but from there Colorado State won eight of the next nine points en route to the 10-point victory.
The second set was the closest of the match as it featured six tied scores and four lead changes. San Diego State held a one-point lead at 18-17, but the Rams scored three straight and the Aztecs were unable to catch up after that. Harris and Cage had four kills apiece for SDSU, but the team was held to a .000 hitting percentage after a -.030 in the opening set.
Set number three unfolded similarly to the opener as Colorado State jumped out to a 4-0 lead and was never caught. The contest turned in the Rams’ favor after SDSU trailed by a single point at 9-8. CSU scored nine of the next 10 points and went on to the comfortable nine-point set win and the match victory.
San Diego State will now have little rest as it returns home where it will host conference foe Nevada on Monday, Oct. 17, at 5:00 p.m. on Aztec Court.
