November 14, 2016 (San Diego) - The lady Aztecs played their first game of the season on Steve Fisher Court tonight against San Diego Christian.

The Aztecs came out much more aggressively than their season opener at UC Riverside, attacking the rim and creating turnovers.  Junior guard McKynzie Fort put on a clinic in the first quarter, including a critical three pointer to go along with junior guard Geena Gomez’s and the Aztecs led 25-20 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Aztecs stayed afloat against a tough Hawks offense and foul trouble for both teams.  More buckets from Fort and Gomez helped them out, as well as a buzzer beating three from senior guard Kymberly Ellison and the Aztecs led 45-37 at the half.  Fort led the team with 17 first half points.

In the second half, the Aztecs took off to a huge lead thanks to Fort and led by 13, 52-39, midway through the third.  But the Hawks crept back and SDSU maintained a six point lead, 56-50, at the end of the third.

But in the fourth, the Aztecs got back in gear with a big three from Ellison and jumped out to a 61-57 lead as the quarter began.  The lead got bigger with another crucial three from Ellison and some free throw help and the Aztecs led by 10 midway through the fourth.  They held strong and won the game by 10, 80-70, in a much better showing than Friday night's game.

Next up for the lady Aztecs is a short trip to SDSU’s crosstown rival, University of San Diego, on Thursday.  Tipoff time is at 7:00 p.m.
