Aztecs narrowly defeated by Bulldogs

March 13, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team faced Yale University today at the Aztec Tennis Center where they came up short against the Bulldogs, 4-3. The Aztecs grabbed the doubles point early on but could not keep their momentum throughout singles play.

In the top seed, doubles pair Jana Buth and Paola Diaz kicked things off with a strong 6-2 win over Tina Jiang and Valerie Shklover, 6-2. Yale answered with a win of its own on court three where Opala Dhingra and Amy Yang defeated Alli Valk and Olivia Larsson, 6-4, but the Aztecs came back as Kennedy Davis and Mia Smith claimed a victory over Elizabeth Zordani and Caroline Lynch, 6-3, in the second seed.

In singles action, Yale picked up steam with wins on court four, where Zordani took down Smith, 6-1, 6-3, and Dhingra moved past Marina Colvee, 6-2, 6-2, in match No. 6. Shklover was also successful against Diaz, claiming a third win for the Bulldogs in the 6-3, 7-6 match.

The Aztecs began to fight their way back as Davis edged Yang, 7-5, 7-5, notching her third-straight singles victory. Buth took Carol Finke to three sets, finishing off the Bulldog in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win. With the dual tied at 3-3, the match decision came down to the fifth-seeded match where Berta Acero eventually fell to Zordani, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Aztecs now sit at 5-11 on the season following today’s loss. Up next, San Diego State faces another Ivy League opponent when it plays 30^th-ranked Dartmouth College this Sunday, March 19.  First serve is set for noon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
