Aztecs claim victories in two singles championship brackets

November 13, 2016 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis wrapped up Fall Classic II today at the Aztec Tennis Center where they saw victories in two championship singles matches, two singles consolation wins and one consolation victory in doubles play.

In the white championship bracket, Kennedy Davis come out victorious after a lengthy match against KSU’s Ana Garcia Navas, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Mia Smith also claimed a win in the consolation draw, taking down Maggie Cohen of Arizona, 7-6 (0), 1-6, 6-1.

Paola Diaz also faced a championship singles match in the gold draw, but could not get past UNT’s Laura Arciniegas with a final match score of 6-2, 6-1. Fellow Aztec Marina Colvee competed in the consolation draw in the gold bracket, but was not successful against Elena Schneider of Arizona, falling 6-2, 6-2.

San Diego State’s second singles championship win came from Olivia Larsson, who had a tough opponent in Haruka Sasaki of UNT in the silver draw. Larsson grabbed a win finishing the match in two sets with 7-6 (6), 6-4. Berta Acero was also able to claim a win, this time in a consolation match against Iva Bago of KSU, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Alli Valk also competed in the consolation draw, but could not get past Livia Cirnu of KSU, 6-1, 6-0.

In the red doubles championship match, Colvee paired up again with UCI’s Hali Dickson to face Minying Liang and Laura Arciniegas of UNT, falling 6-2. SDSU’s Larsson and Acero teamed up to defeat Sofia Thomas and Elena Schneider of Arizona, 6-4, in the consolation draw.

Smith and Valk were the sole Aztec duo playing in the black doubles draw, where they downed opponents Cassidy Branstine and Jackie Tsodikova of UCI, 6-0, in consolation play.

The Aztecs will resume play when they kick off the regular season in 2017, with the first matchups at home Jan. 21 against UC Riverside and UC San Diego.
