New initiative encourages seniors and their loved ones to ‘use their voice’ to advocate on important issues through workshops and social media

November 22, 2011 (San Diego ) -- Seniors First San DiegoTM, an advocacy program of Senior Community Centers, announces a schedule of workshops in San Diego and Bonita for seniors and their loved ones to use their voice to advocate on important issues, such as care giving, entitlement benefits such as social security and Medicare, transportation, housing and more.

The organization offers two types of workshops: Senior Advocacy Workshops and Advocacy 101 Workshops. Senior Advocacy Workshops provide advocacy education to empower people with the knowledge and confidence to become advocates in their communities. These workshops are held throughout San Diego County and can be requested by any group, housing association, or civic group working with seniors.

Advocacy 101 Workshops are specifically for organizations working with older adult populations. These workshops provide the expertise of Paul Downey, president and CEO, Senior Community Centers. Downey, who is also the president of the National Association of Aging Services and Programs (NANASP), leads discussions to bring organizations together to learn and discuss overall advocacy strategies, tactics and an opportunity to network with other organizations facing similar challenges.

The next opportunities to get involved include:
