July 18, 2014 (La Mesa)-The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host a free senior discussion group program titled “Alzheimer’s Disease and Clinical Trials,” from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27. The public is invited to attend and RSVP is not required. The speaker will be Mark Dobrina, lead clinical trials specialist, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital Research Dept.

The discussion on Aug. 27 will include a progress report on Alzheimer’s research and what happens when people volunteer for clinical trials. The Alzheimer’s Association reports a person develops Alzheimer’s disease every 67 seconds, and it affects more than 5 million Americans. Scientists are making strides to help diagnose, slow and treat the disease, but Alzheimer’s research can move forward only if people are willing to volunteer for clinical trials and studies.
